‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Peter McFerrin Hits Trouble as He Goes for Win No. 6

Reigning Jeopardy! champion Peter McFerrin ran into trouble during his sixth game after he qualified for the Tournament of Champions. The energy industry professional tried to continue his streak.

McFerrin, from Corona, California, came into game six with a total of $116,198. On June 8, he played against Kaylea Bowers, from Orlando, Florida, and Alejandro Sobalvarro, from Austin, Texas. Warning: Spoilers for the June 8 episode of Jeopardy! ahead!

The beginning of the game was easy for McFerrin. He had $6,400 by the first 15 clues, having $3,000 more than Sobalvarro, a graduate student.

McFerrin found the Daily Double on clue 22. He had $7,600 in his bank and wagered $2,400 in “Children’s Verse.”

The clue read, “A Robert Browning poem about this legendary figure begins, ‘Hamelin town’s in Brunswick / By famous Hanover City.’” “Who is the Pied Piper?” McFerrin answered correctly, giving him $10,000.

By the end of the round, McFerrin had the lead with $11,200. Sobalvarro was in second place with $4,600. Bowers, a technology product manager, had $1,600.

In Double Jeopardy, McFerrin had the lead for most of the round, but when Sobalvarro found both Daily Doubles back to back, the champion ran into some trouble. Sobalvarro had $8,600 when he found the first DD on clue 10.

He wagered $4,000 in “People From U.S. Places.” The clue was “An eremite is a hermit; an Oremite lives in this state.”

“What is Utah?” Sobalvarro answered correctly. This gave him $12,600, only $1,400 away from tying McFerrin.

Sobalvarro then took the lead when he found the last DD on the next clue. He wagered $2,600 in “Unlikely Meetings.”

The clue read, “John Sayles’ novel Crucible depicts an actual meeting between Henry Ford & this muralist, doing a commission in Detroit.” “Who is Diego Rivera?” he answered correctly. This moved him to first place with $15,200.

However, after only two clues, McFerrin was back in the lead with $16,800. He ended the round with $24,800. Soalvarro had $15,600. Bowers was in third place with $4,000.

The category for Final Jeopardy was “21st Century TV.” The clue was “The title of this series that premiered in 2012 goes back to a colloquial word coined by Alben Barkley’s grandson.” Only one of the game show contestants got it right.

Bowers answered, “What is I <3 You, Liam?” She wagered $3,999, leaving her with $1. Sobalvarro’s response was, “What is Ballers?” He was wrong and dropped to $1 when he wagered $15,599.

McFerrin had the correct response of “What is Veep?” He wagered $6,401, making his final total $31,201.

He won his sixth game, giving him a total of $147,399. McFerrin will return on Tuesday for his seventh game.
