Alyssa Milano paid tribute to her Charmed co-star Shannen Doherty following news of the actress’ death on Sunday.
“It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core [she] was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of,” Milano said. “She was a talented actress, beloved by many and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.”
It was a complicated relationship indeed, with reports of a feud between the two actresses first surfacing two decades ago when they starred together in Charmed, along with Holly Marie Combs. In December last year, Doherty and Combs alleged that Milano orchestrated Doherty being fired from the USA show in 2001, when her character, Prue, was killed off. Rose McGowan ostensibly replaced her in the cast.
Milano later denied the claims, calling them “revisionist history” in a February Instagram post.
Doherty then responded again, saying she and Combs had “simply told the truth because the truth actually does matter.”
Doherty, known also for her starring role on Beverly Hills, 90210, died Saturday. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015; after treatment and several surgeries, she announced in April 2017 that she was in remission. In February 2020, she revealed the cancer had returned and said in June 2023 that cancer had spread to her brain.
