Oprah Winfrey Names Maria Semple’s Go Gentle as Her Latest Book Club Pick

Go Gentle, Semple’s first book in many years, is certainly getting a lot of buzz, and this week, Oprah’s officially picked it as her latest book club title. “For all those who crave a good page turner, this is one wild ride of a story that carries equal parts wit and wisdom,” Winfrey said in a statement Tuesday. “I learned so much about Stoicism — I laughed out loud for real. It’s probably not accurate to call it a “trend,” but I have been really appreciating the increase in popular novels being turned into graphic novels. This year, we’re getting a graphic novel adaptation of Jenny Han’s popular YA novel To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and we’re also seeing a graphic novel adaptation of Shannon Hale’s Princess Academy, among other titles for teen and tween readers. Julia Alvarez’s award-winning novel In The Time of the Butterflies is up for the treatment now, and I hope this is the first among many books published for adult readers that’ll see similar comic adaptation.

    Older Women Leading Historical Fiction

Whether you’re already living in your golden years or barely in your thirties, it’s nice to be reminded that life continues to bring purpose and surprises at every age. That’s certainly the case in these five books about women in their middle or later years. From reflections on life to fighting for the future, these older women prove that it’s never too late to begin a new adventure.
