Leave it to the guys who bedazzled many with the near half-billion grossing The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, to revolutionize the family animated genre once again. On today’s episode of Crew Call, we talk with the…

Spoilers below. The Idol is about nihilism, or consumerism, or gender power dynamics, or the ruins of culture, or sexual empowerment (but probably sexual manipulation), or maybe the price of one’s soul. The rat-tailed club owner seems to think himself capable of remaking Jocelyn into a divine image, if not through reverence than with the force of near-asphyxiation. Theirs is an…

In a cultural milieu that is increasingly recognizing the value of narratives that describe the experience of chronic pain and illness, Emily Wells’ memoir is a unique contribution. In some ways, A Matter of Appearance is not a memoir at all, though that’s where you’ll find it shelved in bookstores. To be sure, Wells’ story is included in its pages. But so are a collection of other stories, from a history of medical misogyny to an examination of ballet pathology, to a (searing) critique of capitalist systems. If literary genres were amenable to nuance, or if I owned a bookstore,…
