The stage is set for one of Chicago’s grandest cultural celebrations: the 73rd Annual Chicago Columbus Day Parade, organized by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans (JCCIA). This year’s event promises to be especially memorable with entertainer Irene Michaels slated to participate, bringing fresh energy to a parade steeped in heritage and community pride.
The Parade: Tradition, Pageantry & Pride
Since 1952, the JCCIA has hosted the Columbus Day Parade as a way to honor Italian-American heritage in the Chicagoland area. The 2025 parade is scheduled for Monday, October 13th, along State Street, from Wacker Drive down to Van Buren Street.
The day’s events will begin in the morning with a mass (celebrated by Fr. Richard Fragomeni) at Old St. Patrick’s Church (700 W Adams St.), followed by a solemn procession to Arrigo Park for a wreath-laying ceremony to honor Italian-American veterans. At noon, opening ceremonies will kick off at the corner of State and Wacker, after which the parade will commence its march southward.

This year, the parade will spotlight Sicily as the Parade Region of Honor. The Grand Marshals for 2025 are Chazz Palminteri (of A Bronx Tale) and tenor Christopher Macchio. Fred Barbara serves as Parade Chairman, with support from Vice Chair Mariann Gullo and the Executive Committee.
Following the parade, a post-parade reception is planned on Rush Street, sponsored by local venues including The Bellevue, Tavern on Rush, Gibson’s, and Carmine’s. The parade will be broadcast live on ABC7 Chicago and live-streamed via abc7chicago.com.
Irene Michaels: A New Presence on State Street
While Irene Michaels has appeared in previous parade coverage — notably through her media brand I On The Scene — her anticipated participation in the 2025 parade marks a higher profile role. In prior years she was seen riding in the parade (for example in a Bentley) and featured in event coverage. This year, her inclusion is expected to draw additional attention — especially among younger audiences and those following her music and media work.

Her presence is likely to include riding in a segment of the parade, interacting with fellow participants, and being part of the cultural spotlight. Whether she offers remarks, performs, or simply joins the procession, her participation is a sign of the evolving reach of the parade beyond traditional community circles.
Sponsors also gain visibility through TV, social media campaigns, physical placement in the parade, and recognition in the program book. The JCCIA’s mission is to promote Italian American culture and heritage, and support from local businesses, cultural groups, and individuals is critical to sustaining the tradition.
What to Expect & Why Her Participation Matters
Irene Michaels’ involvement brings new eyes to a longstanding tradition. Her presence may help bridge generational and cultural divides, bringing media-savvy audiences into contact with Italian-American heritage.
Spectators can expect:
-A rich visual spectacle: floats, marching bands, community organizations
-Cultural pride: celebration of Italian roots, especially Sicilian heritage this year
-Visibility: strong media coverage, thanks to ABC7 and sponsors
