Mike Browning, the drummer and vocalist best known for co-founding the pioneering death metal bands Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died. “R.I.P Mike,” Morbid Angel wrote on Instagram. “Thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.” Browning was 62.
Browning was born May 26, 1964 in Tampa, Florida. He picked up his first drumsticks at age 13 and fell in love with playing along to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin records. After drawing inspiration from bands like Angel Witch, Slayer, and Mercyful Fate for his playing style, Browning found likeminded musicianship in guitarist-turned-friend Trey Azagthoth. By 1983, they formed Morbid Angel together. Their early live shows were marked by ominous guitar riffs, blast beats, and gruesome antics onstage, feeding into the early signs of a new heavy metal subgenre that would become death metal.
Several years after forming, Morbid Angel recorded their first-ever album, Abominations of Desolation, with Browning on lead vocals and drums, often aligning his vocals to fall on-beat. However, they shelved the LP after reportedly being unsatisfied with the recording and, according to Browning, arguing between members. Come the fall of 1986, Browning was fired from the band after a fight with Azagthoth. Abominations of Desolation wouldn’t become available until 1991 when it was released as a demo album.
By then, Browning had long been focusing on other music. He briefly played with Tampa death metal act Incubus (no relation to the other ’90s Incubus) before starting Nocturnus in 1987, fusing the heavy sounds of his earlier project with his interest in sci-fi storytelling and visuals. Nocturnus went on to release two full-length albums during their original run. Their 1990 debut, The Key, remains a foundational piece of the progressive death metal genre. Browning’s run with the band came to an end with 1992’s Thresholds, after the release of which he was fired.
In 2013, Browning ultimately reformed the band under a different name, Nocturnus AD, and onboarded two new guitarists, a bassist, and keyboardist. Browning remained active in Nocturnus AD up until his death, releasing Paradox in 2019 and Unicursal in 2024. He also performed in a handful of projects with singer Lisa Lombardo, including After Death, Devine Essence, and Wolf and Hawk.
Figures across the metal community have paid tribute to Browning online, including Immolation’s Alex Bouks and Michael Amott of Carnage and Arch Enemy. “Mike, you were a musical legend and truly the nicest guy,” wrote Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren. “I can’t believe you’re gone. Thank you for your music and for all the good chats.”
