Apple TV+ on Tuesday released the trailer for the upcoming limited series Lady in the Lake, a Natalie Portman– and Moses Ingram-led mystery-thriller that follows a fledgling journalist and what she unearths while looking into the disappearance of a girl in 1960s Baltimore.
The whirlwind trailer teases the story derived from Laura Lippman’s novel, which focuses on how two women’s lives converge around one’s mysterious death. Portman portrays Maddie Schwarz, a housewife hoping to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist in the city. She becomes obsessed with the death of Ingram’s Cleo Johnson, who is working to advance the interests of Baltimore’s Black community.
“I saw you once, Maddie Schwartz. Before any of this began, I saw you. Alive, I was Cleo Johnson,” Ingram’s narrator says as the trailer opens. “But in my death, I became the lady in the lake. Your writing dreams ruined your life. Now, you wanted those same dreams to rewrite it. But why did you need to drag my dead body into it?”
The seven-part series is scheduled to debut on Apple TV+ with two episodes on July 19, followed by new episodes every Friday though Aug. 23. Lady in the Lake also stars Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince.
Crazy Rose and Bad Wolf America produce the series from Fifth Season, which is created, executive produced, written and directed by Alma Har’el, the Israeli filmmaker behind Honey Boy, which earned her the 2019 DGA Award for best first feature. Portman also serves as an executive producer alongside producing partner Sophie Mas.
