Paramount Passes on Max Landis’ ‘G.I. Joe’ Treatment

Paramount Passes on Max Landis’ ‘G.I. Joe’ Treatment

Paramount Pictures is not moving forward with Max Landis‘ take on a G.I. Joe movie, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

Landis was originally tapped by the studio to work on a treatment for a feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy brand and one of their key IP franchises G.I. Joe, THR exclusively reported in February. The project was supposed to be a comeback from the creator following sexual misconduct allegations in 2019.

However, Paramount has now passed on Landis’ treatment for the film, though the studio is still in talks with other writers and awaiting scripts. One of them being The Righteous Gemstones star Danny McBride, who was hired to work on a separate script for Joe. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, Shooter) is the producer behind the Joe movies.

Paramount did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Landis, the son of Trading Places director John Landis, is a screenwriter who was accused of sexual misconduct in the late 2010s during the height of the #MeToo movement and hasn’t worked since 2019. At the time, numerous women came forward and spoke about Landis’ alleged behavior, and accused him of sexual and emotional abuse. Following a 2019 expose by The Daily Beast, he was dropped by his representatives as CAA and Writ Large, and projects he had in the works died. No charges were filed against Landis.

Three years ago, Landis addressed what he called serious mistakes in relationships and called himself a toxic partner to girlfriends. “I get why certain people hate me,” Landis said in a YouTube video at the time.

Variety was first to break the news.
