The Lake Law Firm Advocates for Victims of Recalled CPAP and BiPAP Machines By Madison Newman

The Lake Law Firm Advocates for Victims of Recalled CPAP and BiPAP Machines By Madison Newman

Sleep apnea is a common but potentially serious sleep disorder that can lead to severe health complications like heart damage or failure. Doctores often prescribe breathing devices like CPAP and BiPAP machines to treat sleep apnea, with more than 8 million CPAP users in the U.S. However, people who used Philips CPAP or BiPAP machines may have been exposed to cancer-causing particles and gases.

Philips, a global health technology company, is well known for its CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilator machines, which are distributed to millions worldwide. Once a leading name in sleep apnea therapy, Philips Respironics has since fallen out of favor due to the company’s extensive recall in June 2021. The PE-PUR sound abatement foam within the machines could break down, releasing toxic particles that patients could inhale or ingest.

The sweeping recall affected over 5 million Philips devices, with many users still awaiting a replacement or repaired machine nearly two years later. Philips has attempted to discredit the widespread criticism over its products by conducting independent testing that claims particulate matter from the degraded foam did not present substantial health effects to patients. Despite its reassurance about the safety of its CPAP and BiPAP machines, the FDA has received 98,000 medical device reports connected to the recalled devices, including 346 reports of deaths.

“Rather than trying to deflect or minimize responsibility, Philips should direct their efforts towards addressing the hundreds, potentially thousands, of individuals injured by their machines,” said Michael Blom, Esq., a leading mass tort attorney and partner at The Lake Law Firm. “Sadly, we could be seeing cancer diagnoses stemming from the recalled devices for years to come.”

Individuals are partnering with The Lake Law Firm to file claims against Philips for injuries associated with its CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilators, including cancer and organ damage or failure. Plaintiffs claim the company was aware  deteriorating foam emitted dangerous debris into the airways of the machines for years before it eventually issued the recall in 2021. According to lawsuits, Philips failed to warn patients or clean or prevent the foam degradation, which is why The Lake Law Firm offers legal services to those harmed by recalled Philips machines.

These lawsuits seek damages from Philips to cover surgeries, medications, ongoing therapies, and rehabilitation. But plaintiffs hope to achieve more than compensation for their personal sufferings. Philips CPAP lawsuits aim to raise awareness about the health risks linked to the devices and inspire safety improvements in sleep apnea machines to prevent future harm and tragedy.

The Lake Law Firm, led by renowned personal injury lawyer Edward J. Lake, Esq., defends people harmed by the negligence of others. The firm has built a vast network of experienced lawyers to champion victims of hazardous drugs, faulty medical devices, and other defective merchandise. With an established track record of success in various personal injury claims, The Lake Law Firm has been at the forefront of high-profile litigation, including Philips CPAP cancer lawsuits.
