‘Today’ Craig Melvin ‘Glad’ To Be Rid Of Al Roker & Dylan Dreyer

Today Show hosts Craig Melvin and Al Roker have an interesting relationship. The beloved weatherman often gives his co-host a hard time. So, viewers weren’t really surprised when Craig admitted that he was “glad” to be rid of Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer. Keep reading for all the details.

Al Roker Hinted At Being Replaced Before Week-long Absence

Today Show viewers who were hoping to get weather updates from Al Roker last week were sorely disappointed. The longtime weatherman was absent the entire week. Summer is the time for vacation and it was his turn to take much-deserved time off. However, his absence could someday become permanent.

He told HELLO! magazine that everyone is replaceable, no matter how long they’ve been on the show. Al Roker celebrated 30 years with the NBC weatherman. “Each one of us is very fortunate to be in this position, for however long we have, and then we pass the baton off to somebody else. So the future of the show is just as strong and bright no matter who steps in,” he said. Is he ready to pass the baton to Craig Melvin?

Craig Melvin has been with the Today Show for nearly eight years. He received a major promotion in 2025 when he replaced Hoda Kotb as Savannah Guthrie’s co-anchor on the show’s first two hours. He also hosts the third hour alongside Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker. But he was “glad” to be rid of his co-hosts.

Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer were both absent from the Friday, July 10, episode. Laura Jarrett and Savannah Sellers stepped in for Dylan while meteorologist Angie Lassman temporarily replaced Al. “You know, I kind of miss them being here though; I want Al or Dylan so we can do the whole weather team unite,” Angie said. “The weather team assembled,” Craig Melvin corrected her on Al and Dylan’s catchphrase. He was recently scolded for trying into insert himself in the duo’s shtick.

Maybe that’s why he said,  “I’m glad they’re not here.” Al was on vacation but Dylan Dreyer was out of the studio on assignment. She was with Carson Daly in Lake Tahoe, NV, to cover the 37th annual American Century Championship on July 9.

My golf game stinks. I’m usually in last place here but part of the fun is exactly that vibe,” she said during the episode. Al Roker returned to the Today Show on Monday, July 13. However, Dylan Dreyer took time off this week to attend a family wedding.

Tell us in the comments if you miss Dylan and Al when they’re not on the show.
