A feature documentary about the Tupac Shakur murder trial and the conviction of Duane “Keffe D” Davis is set to be directed by Emmy-nominated Marian Mohamed for Propagate Content and Passion Pictures.
The true crime film will offer an inside look at the recent Las Vegas jury trial that followed the rapper’s infamous death 30 years ago and the role Davis had in orchestrating his murder. The feature doc will land on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW in 2027, and will include interviews with members of the Shakur family about the courtroom drama.
That includes Mopreme Shakur, the late rapper’s brother and members of his inner circle. Director Mohamed is also a BAFTA winner and had film credits that include Defending Digga D and Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown.
Her murder trial chronicle is set to begin with the first day of evidence and run to the verdict and the sentencing of Davis, as scheduled on Oct. 13. The prosecution called over two dozen witnesses, including police officers and investigators, during the trial.
The long unsolved murder of Shakur was entangled with gang violence and the intense East Coast/West Coast hip-hop rival of the 1990s. Shakur’s record label Death Row, led by Suge Knight, who was driving the car the night Shakur was shot, had been affiliated with the bloods, and rival Bad Boy Records, founded by Sean “Diddy” Combs, had alleged ties to the crips.
“I want this film to give a voice to a family who are not just grieving, but who have taken back agency in how the murder of Tupac is viewed. Most importantly, I want this film to make people laugh and cry and argue. I want whoever watches this to emotionally connect with not just the story of how Tupac died but with who he was,” Mohamed said in a statement.
The film will also feature never-before-seen footage and stills from Shakur’s family and confidantes, set against the courtroom record of the trial itself, according to the producers. “Few mysteries have captured public curiosity quite like the murder of Tupac. This remarkable film takes audiences inside this extraordinary moment with the people who have lived with the questions, the loss, and the search for answers from the very beginning,” Howard T. Owens, co-CEO of Propagate Content, said in a statement.
Passion Pictures will produce the feature along with Propagate Content and West Buttermilk, with Charlotte Rodrigues producing. The executive producer credits are shared by Hamish Fergusson, Will Anderson, David Moulton, Ben Silverman, Owens, Drew Buckley, Taylor Levin and James Packer.
Propagate Content is handling worldwide sales on the documentary feature.
