TV Review: ‘Cape Fear’ | Moviefone

Arriving on Apple TV on June 5th with the first two episodes (and eight more to follow weekly), ‘Cape Fear’ sees recently released convict Max Cady (Javier Bardem) menacing the family of lawyers (played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson) who put him in prison in the first place.

Developed by ‘The Act’ and ‘Channel Zero’ showrunner Nick Antosca, the series also features Lily Colias (‘Good One’), Samantha Clifford (‘The Space Between’), Joe Anders (‘Bonus Track’) and CCH Pounder (‘The Shield’).

    Initial Thoughts

John D. MacDonald’s 1957 psychological thriller novel ‘The Executioners’ has been adapted for screens twice before; once in 1962 starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and again –– more famously –– by Martin Scorsese in 1991, this time featuring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange.

This new TV version draws more heavily from the Scorsese film than anything, but leaves itself over to the question of whether the extended, 10-episode running time is more effective than the taut two-hour thriller Scorsese wrangled, even if he changed some elements and couldn’t include everything.

    Script and Direction

Turns out, when your real focus is Max Cady, the whole is not quite the sum of its parts. Despite Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson giving decent performances, the family, cliched in all the wrong dramatic ways, is never as compelling as Bardem’s scowling, laughing, charismatic antagonist.

Other subplots, such as the mysterious young woman tempting both of the Bowden kids, also rarely come to life.

Directing-wise, the likes of Reed Morano, SJ Clarkson and Morten Tyldum opt for brash, bright and crazed in their color palette and framing, and while it works for Cady and co., it also becomes distracting.

    Cast and Performances

As mentioned, Bardem is the best thing in this, giving life to Cady in all manner of ways (though rarely subtly). Adams and Wilson, by comparison aren’t ever as compelling, though both are watchable.

And –– spoiler alert if you’ve yet to watch past the first couple of episodes –– casting Juliette Lewis (who played the Bowden daughter for Scorsese) as Cady’s bitter, oddball ex works better than it should as what is effectively stunt casting.

    Final Thoughts

Patrick Wilson in 'Cape Fear,' premiering June 5, 2026 on Apple TV.

‘Cape Fear’ only occasionally crosses the threshold of why it needed to be remade, but when it does, it’s camp and entertaining in darkly amusing fashion. We’d probably still stick with Scorsese’s take, though.

‘Cape Fear’ receives 70 out of 100.

What’s the plot of ‘Cape Fear’?

A storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden when Max Cady, the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison and wants revenge.

    Who stars in ‘Cape Fear’?

    • Javier Bardem as Max Cady

    • Patrick Wilson as Tom Bowden
    • Joe Anders as Zack Bowden
    • Lily Collias as Natalie Bowden
