Walter Koenig, Star Trek’s Pavel Chekov and Babylon 5’s Alfred Bester, Dies at 90

Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing Pavel Chekov on Star Trek and Alfred Bester on Babylon 5, has died at the age of 90.

Koenig died Sunday, October 25, at his home in North Hollywood, California, according to his representative, via The Hollywood Reporter. His death was attributed to natural causes. The actor leaves behind a legacy spanning more than six decades, with performances that made him a familiar face to generations of science fiction fans.

Although Koenig will forever be associated with the Russian-born Enterprise crewman who became a fixture of Star Trek, his acting career extended well beyond the bridge of the USS Enterprise. He also worked as a screenwriter, playwright, author, and filmmaker.

Walter Koenig’s Legacy as Pavel Chekov on Star Trek

Born Marvin Walter Koenig in Chicago on September 14, 1936, Koenig grew up in Manhattan as the son of Lithuanian immigrants. He initially studied pre-med at Grinnell College in Iowa before transferring to UCLA, where he studied psychology. An acting class ultimately changed his plans, leading him to study at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse alongside future stars including James Caan, Christopher Lloyd, and Dabney Coleman.

After early television appearances, Koenig landed the role that would define his career. He joined Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek at the beginning of its second season in 1967, playing Ensign Pavel Chekov, the young Russian navigator aboard the Enterprise. Chekov brought a youthful energy to the crew and became part of the show’s enduring ensemble alongside William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, and DeForest Kelley’s Dr. Leonard McCoy. Koenig appeared in 36 episodes across the series’ second and third seasons, helping establish a character who would remain part of the franchise long after the original television run ended. The actor later reprised Chekov in the Star Trek feature films, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 and continuing through Star Trek Generations in 1994.

Koenig was candid about the limitations of his television role. Chekov was often there to help establish a plot point before Kirk, Spock, and McCoy took over, but the character’s popularity with younger viewers gave him a lasting place in the Star Trek universe. Koenig also contributed to the franchise as a writer, penning an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series after missing out on a voice role in the show because of budget issues. He continued returning to the character in later projects, including fan-produced Star Trek productions and video games. In 2023, he also voiced President Anton Chekov in an episode of Star Trek: Picard, bringing his association with the character into another era.

Babylon 5 Gave Koenig a Very Different Role

For many fans, Koenig’s other signature performance came on Babylon 5, where he played Alfred Bester, a member of the Psi Corps. Bester was a manipulative, often unsettling figure whose shifting loyalties and ruthless methods made him one of the series’ most memorable recurring characters.

Koenig initially missed the opportunity to join the show after suffering a heart attack and undergoing quadruple-bypass surgery in 1993. Once he was healthy enough to work again, creator J. Michael Straczynski developed the role of Bester for him. The result was a character who allowed Koenig to explore a darker side of his abilities. Koenig appeared in 12 episodes of Babylon 5 between 1994 and 1998.

    A Career Beyond Science Fiction

Koenig’s work was never limited to his two best-known roles. Early in his career, he appeared in TV shows like Mr. Novak, The Lieutenant, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Gidget, I Spy, and Columbo.

Koenig continued working as an actor while developing a parallel career as a writer. He wrote for the TV series The Powers of Matthew Star, Family, Land of the Lost, and The Incredible Hulk. He also wrote, produced, and starred in the science fiction film InAlienable, released in 2007, which featured fellow Star Trek and Babylon 5 actor Richard Hatch.

His other screen credits included the science fiction film Moontrap, the martial arts picture Sworn to Justice, and a variety of independent productions. He also returned to Chekov in the fan-made Renegades projects, appearing as “The Admiral” in the 2017 series.

Koenig wrote about his life and career in his memoir Warped Factors: A Neurotic’s Guide to the Universe, published in 1998, and revisited his experiences in another book, released in 2020. His work also extended to the stage, where he performed in numerous productions and pursued directing.

In later years, Koenig remained connected to the science fiction community through convention appearances.

    Walter Koenig’s Family and Survivors

Koenig married actress Judy Levitt in July 1965. Levitt appeared alongside him in three Star Trek films and also worked on Babylon 5. Their marriage lasted until her death in December 2022, at the age of 83. The couple had two children. Their son, Andrew Koenig, was an actor known for his role on the sitcom Growing Pains. Andrew died in 2010 at the age of 41. Koenig is survived by his daughter, actress and screenwriter Danielle Koenig.

Our condolences go out to Koenig’s family, friends, and fans.
