Would Gerry Return for Season 3? Star Colton Ryan Teases Dark Theory (Exclusive)

    What To Know

    • Chad Powers star Colton Ryan breaks down Gerry’s arc from Season 2 and teases his Season 3 prediction.
    • Plus, he opens up about filming that taekwondo dance moment.
    • And he weighs in on Gerry’s motivation for going after Russ.

Chad Powers may be tracking the ups and downs of Russ Holliday’s (Glen Powell) attempt at redemption as he competes under the secret identity of Chad, but one character has been onto his scheme since Season 1 and came to a head in Season 2’s arc as Gerry (Colton Ryan) transformed into a villain. Warning: Spoilers for the Chad Powers Season 2 finale ahead!

Determined to make the quarterback suffer for stealing his spot on the South Georgia Catfish football team, Gerry’s belief in Chad’s lies drives him to extreme lengths, among which include hinting at the budding romantic connection between Chad and Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) to Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn). That tamer attack of sorts becomes something more aggressive as Season 2 reaches its climax with Gerry attacking Russ’s best friend Danny (Frankie A. Rodriguez), and ultimately blackmailing Russ when he learns the truth about his secret disguise.

“He truly is the only person who is saying, ‘I noticed that there’s a lie, and no one around here in this culture is saying anything about it. I don’t know what it is yet, but if it smells like s**t and it looks like s**t…’” Ryan tells TV Insider about what drives Gerry to go to such extreme lengths. “I don’t think he really was so jealous about losing the job per se; it’s just the fact that he lost it without merit,” Ryan adds about Chad replacing Gerry as the lead quarterback.

“When you start to believe that if you do good in this world, good comes back to you, and he watches this guy, and all I know is that he’s not doing good, but good things are coming to his doorstep, that can be a lot of jet fuel for anger,” Ryan says.

While Gerry may be the big bad of Season 2, Ryan gets to have a lot of fun leaning into his character’s quirks, particularly in Episode 2’s opening sequence, which sees him dance around while also hitting some taekwondo moves in his apartment clad in just a jockstrap. “You’d be surprised how easy it is for me to get the zoomies and to start unleashing taekwondo,” Ryan says of the sequence. “We did that many times, as you could probably imagine, because we were having a little too much fun [filming].”

As fans see in the later episode, Gerry finds himself in a precarious position when police are after him after finding a planted gun in his locker at the school. Going after Russ, he cuts a blackmail deal to control his next game in order to win big with bets he makes. Ultimately, Russ ignores the deal towards the end of the game, opting to win and risk the consequences.

But just as Gerry goes to confront Russ on the field post-game, he is tackled by Tricia’s (Wynn Everett) security detail and taken away. But what’s going to happen to Gerry if Season 3 is greenlit? As the final minutes of Season 2 reveal, Tricia buys the Chad Powers brand, offering protection for Russ in order to keep playing and winning, and with Gerry knowing the truth, he’s an automatic threat.

When it comes to Ryan’s Season 3 prediction, it seems like things could get even darker for Gerry. “Well, I’m waiting for a Season 3 announcement before I lay my cards out, but we’ve had a conversation or two about where it goes because by Episode 5, I said to Michael [Waldron] and the guys, ‘Well, I’m gonna die in the finale, right?’ I mean, there’s a Chekhov’s gun that’s been laid out now, and the feds are on my ass, so I’m a big problem to take care of,” Ryan explains.

But there’s an alternative, it seems, as he further explains, “They have a pretty awesome and straightforward way of getting through that, I think, from what we’ve talked about, but yeah, I think the sky’s the limit in terms of all things.” Could Gerry’s story end tragically or would Chad Powers refrain from going that far? Only time will tell if the comedy returns for Season 3.
