‘American Idol’ Fans Rage Over Elimination Of 2 Favorites

With each new season of American Idol, fans tune in to see the contestants dwindle down until a finalist is announced. Even with judges and viewers voting in, there can still be some surprises with who leaves the show. Recently, quite a few fans voiced their surprise with Season 23’s Top 10.

Fans Recently Saw American Idol Reach Its Top 10 This Season

American Idol is currently in its 23rd season, with the series reaching its Top 12 during the April 27 episode. Viewers saw the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame”-themed episode end with the elimination of Desmond Roberts and Amanda Barise.

However, two contestants would soon learn they were only safe for the night, as the following night would bring things down to the Top 10. This time, the contestants performed songs dedicated to former American Idol winner Fantasia, who served as a mentor for them.

This time, the two eliminated singers were Ché and Filo. Ché performed Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” while Filo performed “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls.

Taking to social media, some fans shared they were surprised by the recent elimination. As one fan wrote, “I am in shock at tonight’s elimination.” They continued, “[Filo] was so good tonight. I can’t believe he got cut. Anyone have any idea why?”

Some Fans Agreed With The Elimination, Others Defended Filo

Taking to the comments, many fans shared their own reactions. Many fans felt that the elimination isn’t too reflective of talent. As one fan noted, “Unfortunately, it’s not about who gave the best performance.”

“It’s a popularity contest. That’s how the cookie crumbles. I think Filo is going to have a musical career anyway.”

As previously reported, this is an issue fans often have with competition series. Often, it has been claimed that a sympathetic backstory could give a contestant a bit of an advantage.

However, a few fans also agreed that it came as a surprise to them to see Filo in particular get eliminated. A few others felt that many of the contestants had talent and someone simply had to leave. Others agreed with the eliminations. Some comments included:

    • “I was so shocked. He’s one of the few who actually puts on a performance. Most others just stand there and don’t connect with the audience.”
    • “My fiancé and I loved Che and Filo, I thought tonight was the best performance from them both. I thought 2 of the correct people went home last night, and 2 of the incorrect people went home tonight; that’s just the way this show goes.”
    • “I think a lot of the people this season have good or powerful singing voices…I just don’t feel most of them have the ‘it’ factor as far as artistry goes.”
    • “I’ll be shocked if anyone other than John, Slater, Breanna or Jamal win this show. I’m not shocked that Filo went home. He’s a nice guy, but his singing style is annoying. Too loud. Too many runs. Just too much.”
    • “I am raging over this, Che was my favorite, this is BS”
