‘Reacher’ Season 4’s Villain Twist Changes Everything — Plus, What’s on Anna’s Drive?

    What To Know

    • Episode 4 of Reacher reveals the truth about Anna Merrick’s death.
    • Plus, the true villains are exposed, and a surprise is in store for Reacher.

In Episode 4 of Reacher, we get the truth behind Anna Merrick’s (Karen Kwong-Chip) death while introducing a major new twist in the conspiracy. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Reacher Episode 5 “Bridge.”

In it, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) determines that Anna was being forced to hand over a stolen government file in exchange for her kidnapped son, Ben (Denis Wong), and that she died by suicide after realizing he was already dead, and Reacher had unknowingly ruined her plan for revenge. The bigger shock comes, though, after Ben is found murdered with a distinctive Indonesian knife, the same type of weapon seen wielded by Lila (Agnez Mo) and her “mother,” Amisha (Anggun).

When Reacher arrives at their hotel expecting to rescue them from four attackers, he instead finds the women have already mutilated and killed the men themselves, revealing they are far more dangerous and more deeply connected to the conspiracy than anyone suspected. Reacher is played for a fool as he walks right into Lila and Amisha’s trap and becomes the fall guy for their crimes.

Reacher quickly realizes he’s been duped by Lila. Now officially on the run after police blame him for the deaths of the people found in Lila’s hotel room, Reacher goes on the run. Literally.

After escaping the hotel through a garbage chute, he calls Tamara (Sydelle Noel), who connects Ben and Mary Ellen’s (Manon Ens-Lapointe) murders to the same curved blades used at the hotel: karambits, knives from Indonesia. That’s when Reacher realizes he’s been set up. Tamara believes Lila and Amisha hired OnlyFans foot model Mary Ellen to seduce Ben, then killed her and abducted him. Reacher also suspects Anna mailed the missing thumb drive to Jacob (Chris Marquette), but before he can investigate, police catch up with him, hit him with their car, and arrest him.

Meanwhile, Russell (Kevin Weisman) discovers Lila used a platinum credit card to bring someone named Tomas Waberi into the country. At Jacob’s house, the group finds Anna’s drive and phone in his mailbox, but Lila and Amisha attack, sparking a car chase that ends on a bridge. Police arrive, forcing the women to jump over the side and escape. Reacher, meanwhile, gets a visit in jail from Tamara’s partner, Det. Shaun Docherty (Kevin Corrigan), who demands, “What the hell do you have Tamara tied up in?” Things get worse when an alleged CIA agent posing as “Officer Baker” arrives to kill him. Reacher pulls him through the bars of his cell, rips off an ear, then steals his keys and breaks out.

Jacob tries to convince his uncle, Mayfield Police Lt. Monty DeRosa (Nick Searcy), that the feds may be covering something up, begging for help. “We are a demoted detective, a small-town cop, and a blogger. We are in over our heads.” Realizing that his beloved Uncle Monty doesn’t believe him and will only follow the letter of the law, Jacob decides to ignore him, not call the feds, steal a police car, and reunite with Reacher and the others.

Together, the gang finally opens Anna’s drive and discovers only one file: a 25-year-old photograph of Sampson (Marc Blucas), Cahill (Chris Owens), and mass murdering maniac General Putra (Chris Owens) together in Indonesia alongside an unidentified scientist. With mercenaries, federal agents, the CIA, and Lila all killing to get it, the obvious question is, “Why would anyone kill over this?”

Anna’s phone offers a much darker clue. Her final messages show Lila ordering her to bring the drive to an abandoned Philadelphia restaurant while threatening Ben: “If you involve any authorities or deviate from these instructions, there will be severe consequences for him and yourself.” There is also video of Lila and Amisha torturing Mary Ellen in front of Ben, leaving Jacob desperate for revenge.

Reacher calls Sampson, who claims the fourth man in the photograph was a scientist doing malaria research but says he can’t remember his name after 25 years. Before they can dig deeper, police descend on the hotel. Tamara pretends to arrest Reacher, but their cover is blown by an observant hotel staffer, leading to another wild chase that ends with Reacher shielding Tamara as they crash through a glass roof.

They eventually reach the abandoned restaurant where Ben was held, only to find Lila waiting, twirling her blade like a cartoon villain. But she has another surprise up her sleeve: Lila and Amisha have taken Jacob hostage.
