Trevor Noah Asks Journalists To Ask One Important Question

Trevor Noah has had a number of hosting jobs over the years, from The Daily Show to various events. Recently, a clip of Noah during such an appearance has once again gone viral online. Since then, many are focusing on an important message he imparted to journalists on a global scale.

Trevor Noah Hosted & Headlined The White House Correspondents’ Dinner In 2022

Noah is a comedian originally from South Africa. Serving as a runner-up on the country’s version of Strictly Come Dancing‘s fourth season, he later hosted the late-night talk show, Tonight with Trevor Noah. Noah gained further international recognition as the host of The Daily Show.

Originally joining the show in 2015, succeeding Jon Stewart, Noah departed in 2022. Following this, he has taken part in international stand-up tours and hosted a weekly interview podcast, What Now? with Trevor Noah. He has also hosted the Grammy Awards for six consecutive years.

Back in 2022, Noah hosted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. With Joe Biden attending, it was the first time a sitting U.S. president attended since 2016.

Actor and comedian Mike Birbiglia, known for his work in Trainwreck, The Fault in Our Stars, and Orange Is the New Black, shared a clip of Noah’s closing remarks at the time. Taking to X, he captioned the share, “I’ve always respected @Trevornoah so much, but this closing speech from the White House correspondents’ dinner is particularly spectacular.”

Noah Told Reporters To Ask Themselves One Special Question Every Day

Speaking with reporters, Noah asked those listening to think back at current events. He shared, “If you ever begin to doubt your responsibilities, if you ever begin to doubt how meaningful it is, look no further than what’s happening in Ukraine. Look at what’s happening there. Journalists are risking and even losing their lives to show the world what is happening. You realize how amazing that is?”

“In America, you have the right to seek the truth and speak the truth, even if it makes people in power uncomfortable. Even if it makes your viewers or readers uncomfortable. You understand how amazing that is?”

It was then that Noah asked reporters a certain question. As he shared, “If Russian journalists who are losing their livelihoods … and their freedom for daring to report on what their own government is doing—If they had the freedom to write any words, to show any stories, or to ask any questions—if they had, basically, what you have—would they be using it in the same way that you do?” Noah felt that this was something that reporters should always keep in mind. He expressed, “Ask yourself that question every day because you have one of the most important roles in the world.”
